Rapid responses of pristine marine planktonic communities in experimental approach to diuron and naphthalene (Juan de Nova Island, Western Indian Ocean) ArchiMer
Bouvy, Marc; Dupuy, Christine; Got, Patrice; Domaizon, Isabelle; Carré, Claire; Pagano, Marc; Debroas, Didier; Roques, Cécile; Leboulanger, Christophe.
Planktonic communities from Juan de Nova lagoon were submitted to a single exposure of diuron or naphthalene in triplicate outdoor 40-L mesocosms for 5 days. The study followed the temporal changes of the assemblages by determining abundances and taxonomic level of microbial (heterotrophic prokaryotes, picocyanobacteria, heterotrophic protists and phytoplankton) and metazooplankton communities. Exposure to both contaminants did not result in significant changes in phytoplankton abundances. Microscopic identification demonstrated the dominance of Bacillariophyta (mostly Chaetoceros tenuissimus) accounting for more than 95% of the microalgae detected in all mesocosms. Using 18S rRNA metabarcoding, temporal changes in the proportion of eukaryotic operational...

Reproductive timing and larval dispersal of intertidal crabs: the predator avoidance hypothesis RChHN
CHRISTY,JOHN H..
Many intertidal and shallow water crabs have strong reproductive cycles and migratory larvae. Females release larvae near the time of high water of the larger amplitude nocturnal tides during the semilunar or lunar cycles. Newly hatched larvae move quickly at night toward and into the sea where, weeks later, they develop to megalopae that then ride nocturnal flood tides inshore and up estuaries to settle in adult habitats. It was first thought that crabs might time larval release so that larvae will become megalopae when they can ride the larger amplitude spring flood tides to adult habitats. This idea was rejected when it was found that were was no change in the timing of hatching during the breeding season by several estuarine species that would...

Role des bacteries phototrophes anoxygeniques dans une partie stratifiee d'une lagune tropicale (Lagune Ebrie, Cote d'Ivoire) ArchiMer
Caumette, P.
In the deepest parts of the estuarine region of Ebrie Lagoon (Abidjan Africa, (5 degree N, 4 degree W) stratified conditions have been observed during the rainy season (May to Nov.), owing to salinity differences between oxic and anoxic layers. At the interface, 3-4 m depth, phototrophic bacteria (Chromatium, Chlorobium and Pelodictyon ) developed, forming a brown layer due to their different pigments. Their production has been estimated at 41% of the total photosynthetic production during high stratification (Sep. 1981) and their biomass was used by the copepod population for 40 to 60% of its diet. During the dry season, the water column became homogeneous and oxygen was detected to 6m depth. The brown layer of phototrophic bacteria disappeared, as well...

Searching Explanations of Nature in the Mirror World of Math Ecology and Society
Scheffer, Marten; Wageningen Agricultural University; Marten.Scheffer@wur.nl.
Despite the huge scientific progress of the last century, the dynamics of complex systems such as the atmosphere, human societies, and ecosystems remain difficult to understand and predict. Nonetheless, our ability to carve the future depends largely on our insight into the functioning of such complex systems. Complex systems are the focus of considerable mathematical theory. Rather than referring to any particular part of the world, such theory addresses what seems to be another world: a world of strange attractors, catastrophe folds, torus destruction, and homoclinic bifurcations. So disparate is the language and notation in this discipline that it is hard to imagine that it has any thing to do with reality as we know it. Indeed, it deals with a kind of...

Seasonal variation of stable isotope ratios of size-fractionated zooplankton in the Bay of Marseille (NW Mediterranean Sea) ArchiMer
Banaru, Daniela; Carlotti, Francois; Barani, Aude; Gregori, Gerald; Neffati, Nada; Harmelin-vivien, Mireille.
Stable isotope ratios of six size fractions of zooplankton (80 to >2000 mm) were analyzed seasonally in 2009-2010 at the SOMLIT site in the Bay of Marseille. Isotopic ratios generally increased with zooplankton size. The highest delta N-15 values were observed in the 1000-2000 mm fraction. The largest size class (>2000 mu m), dominated by gelatinous plankton, had lower delta N-15 values due to the low isotopic signatures of most of these organisms. In the larger size fractions (>1000 mu m), isotopic ratios were measured at the taxon level. Brachyuran, stomatopod, teleost and cephalopod larvae showed the highest delta N-15 values, and salps and pteropods the lowest ones. Lower values of both delta C-13 and delta N-15 were recorded in winter and...

Simplified Transformation of Ostreococcus tauri Using Polyethylene Glycol ArchiMer
Sanchez, Frédéric; Geffroy, Solene; Norest, Manon; Yau, Sheree; Moreau, Hervé; Grimsley, Nigel.
Ostreococcus tauri is an easily cultured representative of unicellular algae (class Mamiellophyceae) that abound in oceans worldwide. Eight complete 13–22 Mb genomes of phylogenetically divergent species within this class are available, and their DNA sequences are nearly always present in metagenomic data produced from marine samples. Here we describe a simplified and robust transformation protocol for the smallest of these algae (O. tauri). Polyethylene glycol (PEG) treatment was much more efficient than the previously described electroporation protocol. Short (2 min or less) incubation times in PEG gave >104 transformants per microgram DNA. The time of cell recovery after transformation could be reduced to a few hours, permitting the experiment to be...

Species richness of testate amoebae in different environments from the upper Paraná river floodplain (PR/MS) - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v33i3.7261 Biological Sciences
Costa, Deise de Morais; Universidade Estadual de Maringá; Alves, Geziele Mucio; UEM; Velho, Luiz Felipe Machado; UEM; Lansac-Tôha, Fábio Amodêo; UEM.
This study evaluated the species richness of testate amoebae in the plankton from different environments of the upper Paraná river floodplain. Samplings were performed at subsurface of pelagic region from twelve environments using motorized pump and plankton net (68 µm), during four hydrological periods. We identified 67 taxa, distributed in seven families and Arcellidae, Difflugiidae and Centropyxidae were the most representative families. Higher values of species richness were observed in the lakes (connected and isolated) during the flood pulses. Centropyxis aculeata, Difflugia gramem and D. pseudogramem were frequent throughout the study period. Seasonal variability of species in the channels and isolated lakes was evidenced by beta...

This is the 33th annual surveillance report concerning the nuclear power plant of Gravelines. Its very high power level results from six plant units located on the shore and is characterised by a cooling system with a coastal surface input and output. The production of electricity began in 1980 and reached maximum in 1986. Surveys concern monitoring of pelagic system (hydrology, microbiology, phytoplankton, zooplankton), fish populations (larvae and eggs of Sole and Sprat) or crustaceans (shrimps), and benthic macrofauna (intertidal and subtidal). This survey deals with spatial and temporal approaches (i) study of the direct impact by comparison of the input and output seawater stations, (ii) study of medium and long term evolution of the area by...
